We Feed Chaffhaye To Our Goats and Sheep
Product Description: Chaffhaye is an ensiled pure alfalfa product grown in Texas and harvested when the natural sugars are optimum. The afalfa is cut and harvested using special equipment that helps to quickly dry the cuttings to reduce the moisture content to about 50%. The harvested alfalfa is then processed and sprayed with molasses and packed in airtight 50 lb plastic bags.
We became the Oregon wholesalers for this product because we wanted to use it for our animals and there was no one selling the product in Oregon but turned the dealership over to our local feed store. One of the premises of our management program is that nutrition is THE single most important part of an Angora goat program. Consistency in their ration is critical to producing top quality fleeces and allowing each animal to achieve it's genetic potential. That's where Chaffhaye comes in and why we chose this product.

1) We were not satisfied with the quality and consistency of the alfalfa hay and alfalfa flakes are heck on fleeces!  The animals love it, however, and it has great nutrition.

2) Chaffhaye is much more nutritionally available and digestible than baled alfalfa. The total digestible nutrient for good quality baled alfalfa runs between 38-45%. Chaffhaye has 70-80% TDN. More protein with less volume is available to grow mohair with less cleanup in the barn (which is raked at least once a day unless we are out of town).

3) Waste! Goats can waste about 30-50% of baled hay. Once it hits the ground they're done with it.  Remember the rake the barn part? I've also got to put that stuff somewhere.

4) Cost! We are consuming Chaffhaye on a 1:3 ratio versus baled alfafa which makes it cheaper than feeding baled alfalfa in Southern Oregon. Baled alfalfa here is now about $250 a ton. Plus we don't measure the cost simply on the cost of feed but the other economic costs as well.

5) Chaffhaye has no dust so there is less coughing for the goats and us. The goats don't bury their head in the feeder meaning less vegatable matter in the fleeces to clean later.

6) I am getting too old or too tired to buck 145 lb. bales of hay. The 50 lb. bags are so much easier to handle and quicker to put up in the barn. One 50 lb. bag is equal to a 145 lb. bale yet takes up only a third of the space which is nice if you are traveling with food.

7) The bags are sealed and can be stored outside and have a two year shelf life. Each bag is stamped with the put up date. The packaging method preserves the nutrition value where baled hay will loose nutritionial value over time.  (Not that we have much sitting around for that long!)

8) The Angora goats won the 2003 Black Sheep Cup (best five fleeces from a single breeder) for the first time in the history of the Black Sheep Gathering. Sierra Tahoe Angora Goats won the cup. They feed Chaffhaye to their Angoras.
